The history of St Paul’s Church is closely linked with the growth of Pontyclun itself. During the late nineteenth century, the developing community around Llantrisant railway station was expanding rapidly. Anglican services were initially held in the local schoolroom, but increasing attendance made the accommodation overcrowded and uncomfortable, creating the need for a permanent church.
 

St Paul’s was designed by the distinguished South Wales architect Edwin Montgomery Bruce Vaughan. The foundation stone was laid by Miss Masters on 15 August 1894, with John Morgan of Llantrisant appointed as contractor. Built principally from local grey Pennant sandstone with Bath stone dressings, the church cost approximately £1,500 and provided seating for 306 worshippers. Appropriately, it was originally known as “St Paul’s Church at Llantrisant Station.”
 

The completed church was opened and licensed for worship on 27 June 1895. Its arrival coincided with a period of considerable change, as the railway, local industries and new housing transformed the small settlement into the growing village of Pontyclun. St Paul’s quickly became an established landmark and an important part of community life.
 

In 1924, Pontyclun and Talygarn became a separate ecclesiastical parish, having previously formed part of the ancient parish of Llantrisant. Inside St Paul’s are reminders of succeeding generations, including its timber roof, two bells and stained glass, with an Ascension window dating from around 1919.
 

More than 130 years after its opening, St Paul’s remains an active Christian church. Today it forms part of the Llan Ministry Area in the Diocese of Llandaff, continuing the purpose for which it was built: worship, Christian witness, fellowship and faithful service to the people of Pontyclun and the wider surrounding local community.
